My blog is my space to highlight academic work outside of my formal publications. Posts vary from short essays to album reviews to exemplary student work to small sample-digs that I use as warm-ups for my courses. This blog also contains the burgeoning archive of artist interviews that I am collecting for my dissertation, "Writing in the Break."

Digging the Digital Crates: Drake and Lauryn Hill

Updated: Aug 22, 2018

Today we're digging into Drake's sample of Lauryn Hill's "Ex-Factor" in "Nice for What."

The sample is from Hill's "Ex-Factor"

Which is also sampled in:

1) Rapsody's "My Song" (2013)

2) Teyana Taylor's "Her Room (Marvin's Room Remix)" (2011) [@4:16]

Which interpolates/remixes Drake's "Marvin's Room" (2011)

3) Kehlani's "Til the Morning" (2014) [@ 2:44]

4) Cardi B's "Be Careful" (2018) [sample and interpolation? @2:12]

And Lauryn Hill remixed Drake's sample live and has been performing it on her most recent tour:

Why is Lauryn Hill so significant, especially for female artists? Check out this recent NYT piece on a new book by hip-hop journalist Joan Morgan reflecting on the 20 year anniversary of the release of Hill's only full length release, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998).
