Blog

My blog is my space to highlight academic work outside of my formal publications. Posts vary from short essays to album reviews to exemplary student work to small sample-digs that I use as warm-ups for my courses. This blog also contains the burgeoning archive of artist interviews that I am collecting for my dissertation, "Writing in the Break."

Digging the Digital Crates: Missy Elliott's "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)"

Missy Elliott's debut album contained the hit single "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)." The Virginia emcee's video for the single was directed by legendary director Hype Williams.

The Timbaland-produced single samples Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand the Rain" (1973).

Which Tina Turner covered on her 1983 album Private Dancer.

As did Graham Central Station in 1975.

Crazy enough, I was record digging at a scrap exchange in Durham, and I bought both the Missy Elliot sample and the Tina Turner by accident. I had no idea that Turner's record had a version of "The Rain"!

The Peebles version was also sampled in Talib Kweli's "Memories Live" on Train of Thought (2000) @ 0:15

And Missy Elliot's sample was sampled again in 2014 with Wiz Khalifa's "The Rain."

Congratulations to Missy Elliott on her acceptance to the Songwriters' Hall of Fame! A legend!
